Sophia’s Style Guide: What to wear to Wimbledon to impress

Wimbledon returns to the All England Lawn and Tennis Club (AELTC) from June 29 to July 12, 2026 for Britain’s favourite summer dress code. Prepare your tennis whites, gingham, linen, sun hats and, of course, your sunglasses (ideally, polarised, for the best viewing experience). 

So here’s how to dress for it properly, whether you plan to sit courtside or watch the action from a sunny garden somewhere. 

Is there a dress code for Wimbledon?

For general spectators, there’s no enforced dress code, so you won’t be officially turned away per se, but there’s a strong unwritten dress code: smart, understated and summer-elegant. In essence, the best of Britain. Think your cool friend’s garden party vibes, with a side of great sport.

Two places do have real rules, though. Players must wear entirely white, a tradition still enforced on the court. The Royal Box on Centre Court, too, has a smart dress code for its invited guests. Everywhere else reflects this spirit: the true spirit of quiet luxury.

What should spectators wear to Wimbledon?

Elevated summer tailoring, of course. But bear in mind June temps in London are expected to soar, so make sure you’re comfortable enough to survive the heat. The fabrics matter much more than the labels.

• Linen and lightweight cotton: breathable, with a slight crease. A relief by mid-afternoon when the heat truly sets in.
• A blazer or unstructured jacket: over a simple dress or skirt. 
• A midi or tea dress for a classic, photogenic option that handles the weather swings (Wimbledon’s also been known for being breezy and wet - you can never bet on the British weather).
• Comfortable, walkable shoes: it’s often difficult to find a cab around Wimbledon, and the walk from the nearest Tube can be… lengthy. You’ll also likely find yourself walking and standing around longer than you think, on all terrains from uneven cobblestones to grass.
• Hero accessories: panama hats, structured totes, sunglasses, of course.

What colours suit Wimbledon?

Lean into the tournament’s natural palette: cream, whites, green, greys, a soft taupe. Crisp with a green lawn behind you. 

Avoid neon or anything heavily branded. It fights the setting. If you want a single point of colour, let it be one piece, rather than the full look. 

What sunglasses suit Wimbledon?

Wimbledon is an outdoor event which we (hope) will be in full sun, which makes eyewear one of those few accessories that’s both genuinely practical and a style statement. The setting sets the scene for you: a pair of frames with real depth and no visible branding is the single most “quiet luxury” thing you could wear.

What to look for:

• Acetate over plastic, always. Up close, in summer light, the difference is obvious. 
• A classic shape not driven by trend. 
• No logos. The fastest way to look like you’re compensating for a name is to wear one across your temple.

Our favourite looks

• Layer for the swing. Mornings and shaded seats are cool; midday sun on open court is hot. Pieces that you can switch on and off are ideal.
• Pack for rain without dressing for it first. A compact umbrella or foldable rain Mack, not a full waterproof.
• Protect against the sun properly. A hat and good, 100% UV protected sunglasses aren’t just styling - sessions can run for hours with little shade on outside courts.
• Choose shoes for the walk. It’s a big site and a long day on your feet. Elegant and walkable is the full game.
